Residential House On Bright Summer Day

How Summer’s Heat Can Affect Your Home’s Siding

Summer is great for barbecues, pool parties and outings to the lake. But it can also be brutal on your home’s exteriors, especially your siding. As you know, your siding plays a critical role in the health, comfort and appearance of your home. This is why it’s important to keep it in excellent condition all year round. However, there’s not much you can do about the harsh sun in summer. That said, it’s good to be aware of how summer weather impacts your siding.

Fading

Faded siding is one of the biggest side effects of sun exposure. The rate and type of fading will differ with the type of siding material. Exposure to UV rays can change the color of your siding over time, with some siding materials being more susceptible to fading than other types. Low quality and dark colored siding are more prone to fading than high quality and light colored siding.

Some siding types are more fade-resistant, so you can choose darker or vibrant colors with confidence. When choosing siding, be sure to stick with high-quality, fade-resistant siding, or go with a neutral color that may not show fading as much.

Melting

High temperatures will melt lower quality siding over time, especially if you have low-quality, dark colored siding. Even the sun’s reflection from your neighbor’s window can melt your vinyl siding. It can melt if you place your grill near it as well. Choose thermal stable siding which can better withstand heat and high temperatures.

Vulnerability

Some types of siding expand in the heat, making them more prone to damage. As a result, your siding can become brittle and worn, leading to high replacement costs. Certain siding types can better withstand the heat than other types, and won’t get brittle or expand as much.

Swelling and Water Absorption

Swelling and water absorption are two more side effects of summer sun damage to your siding. Many siding materials will absorb water, which causes them to swell. Moisture infiltration can happen in a number of ways, from summer rain storms to your sprinkler system to water toys. This is why you want to choose a moisture-resistant siding.
