Having Trouble with Ice Dams?
Property owners in the Twin Cities are no strangers to ice dams. These are ridges of solid ice that form at the edge of your roof while preventing melting snow from draining off. The water behind the ice dam builds up and can leak into the home, damaging insulation, walls and ceilings. As you can imagine, this can become quite an expensive repair.
If you discover you have an ice dam, it’s important to call a contractor who is skilled in addressing roofing damage quickly and efficiently.
One way to keep ice dams from happening is to remove accumulating snow from your roof. However, this can be a dangerous proposition for property owners due to the risk of fall and the risk of damaging shingles while you’re up there. If you can’t reach your roof or have no desire to climb up there, call Allstar Construction to keep your roof free from ice, snow and damage.
How to Prevent Ice Dams
There are a few ways you can prevent ice dams from forming in the first place.
1. Create Attic Bypasses
Did you know that one-third of heat loss in the average home is through the ceiling and up into the attic? That’s usually due to air leaks resulting from drywall gaps, cracks around fixtures and access hatches, and unblocked walls. Find and seal all gaps that can lead to air leaks, or hire a contractor who can do it for you.
2. Ensure Sufficient Insulation
Checking the depth of your insulation is a good idea. You should have between 12 and 14 inches of fiberglass or cellulose insulation in your attic, with an R-value of R-40.
3. Add Vents
Because attic vents draw in cold outdoor air and send out warmer air, this process can cool both your attic and your roof. When you don’t have enough vents, or the ones you do have are blocked, this prevents that transfer of air, trapping warm air in your attic. Warm attics melt the snow on your roof, which refreezes at the edge of your roof where it’s not as warm. Keeping your attic cool in winter with sufficient soffit and ridge vents will keep the air flowing.
