From home size and architectural style, to roof color and neighborhoods trends, there are many factors to consider when choosing the right color for your home’s new siding. Here’s a deeper look into each one.
1. Home Size
While looking at color swatches to get an idea of the colors you like can be a good starting point, they often aren’t a true indicator of how the siding will look on your home when all is said and done. For instance, a dark color can look distinctive and rich at first, but when installed on your mid-to large-scale house, it may look overpowering and gloomy.
At the other end of the spectrum, light colors can keep a small home from standing out amidst its surrounding landscape. Lighter colors tend to neutralize features you want to de-emphasize, while darker colors draw the eye to areas you wish to showcase.
2. Architectural Style
The style of your home also plays a big role, giving you visual cues that will guide you in your selection. Take Colonial homes, for example. These often feature one classic color such as white, but if you add some unusual accents, you can bring a modern yet subtle touch on a traditional style. If you have a cottage or country style home, you have a bit more flexibility in siding colors.
3. Roof Color
Your roof has a lifespan of 20 to 30 years and up depending on the material and how well you care for it. This means you will have to live with the color combination you choose for a very long time. Make sure the siding color complements your existing roof color. Ask your roofer or a designer for advice if you’re unsure. In general, if your roof is dark, go with a lighter siding color. If your roof is light or neutral, you can go either way: light or dark on the siding.
4. Neighborhood Trends
Take a walk or drive around the neighborhood to take note of what everyone has for siding colors. Of course, you will want to incorporate your own personal style into your choice, but it helps to stay in line somewhat with your immediate neighbors, especially if they have the same style home as you. If you live in a traditional neighborhood, consider a neutral siding color scheme, such as beiges, grays and blues. If you live in an eclectic neighborhood, you have more freedom to go with more colorful choices.
