If you have your heart set on an asphalt shingle roof for your home, that’s only the first decision you will have to make. The other important decision is: what kind of asphalt shingle system will you get? Here are a few considerations to think about before committing.
Three Types of Asphalt Shingles
First, let’s go over the three main types of asphalt shingles.
- 3-tab asphalt shingles: The oldest type of asphalt shingle, these lay flat and feature three tabs on each strip. They are the most affordable type but are also the most susceptible to damage from wind. They also have the shortest lifespan and have less attractive warranty options. For those reasons, they are starting to be phased out of the roofing industry.
- Architectural asphalt shingles: Also known as dimensional shingles, these are the most common type used today. They provide an aesthetically pleasing random pattern for your roof, adding depth and dimension. Some can even mimic the look of wood shakes. They are the most affordable material that still provides high quality, backed by a 25-year lifespan with enhanced warranties.
- Luxury asphalt shingles: Also known as designer or premium shingles, these offer the highest quality, and can mimic slate for the ultimate in curb appeal. Larger and thicker than other types, this makes them more durable and allows them to last up to 50 years with proper care. They carry enhanced material warranties.
Factors to Consider
From budget to appearance, there are many things to consider when choosing the right type for you.
Budget:
It may all come down to how much you are willing to spend on your new roof. A new roof is a big investment no matter what, but adding luxury shingles will add greatly to your cost. As stated above, the cheapest option is the 3-tab shingle, but keep in mind you will sacrifice quality and lifespan.
Architectural asphalt shingles cost 15 to 30 percent more but have a longer lifespan and better warranty options. Luxury shingles will cost you the most – nearly double the cost of architectural shingles – but you won’t have to replace your roof for 50 years.
Curb Appeal:
Any new asphalt roof will enhance your home’s curb appeal, but each type will affect it in different ways. 3-tab asphalt shingles bring the lowest curb appeal. Architectural asphalt shingles give you a better curb appeal but they don’t stand out quite as much as luxury shingles which undoubtedly bring the highest curb appeal. How unique and attractive you want your roof to be will depend on what you choose here.
Warranties:
Material warranties are necessary to protect your investment if something ever comes up down the line with your asphalt shingles. Each type has its own material warranties from the manufacturer.
3-tab shingles have a 25-year warranty out of the package, while both architectural and luxury shingles have a 30-year prorated warranty out of the package but they may be able to qualify for an enhanced 50-year non-prorated warranty.
Lifespan:
3-tab shingles have a 25-year lifespan, while architectural and luxury shingles have a 30-year lifespan. That being said, luxury shingles may even have a 50-year lifespan with good care.
