Tips for Getting Your Home’s Exterior Ready for Winter

We know: Summer is barely over and we’re already talking about winter? It’s important to think ahead when it comes to protecting your home’s exterior, from the roof and siding to windows and doors. Here’s how to get your home ready for the impending winter. You’ll thank yourself later for being proactive!

Do a Visual Inspection

First, take a walk around your house and inspect all exteriors, noting any areas that may become problems if not addressed before winter. Focus on the roof, gutters, hard exterior surfaces (foundation and exterior walls), patios or decks, walkways and driveways, the chimney, and around door frames and windows.

Check the exterior faucets and switch off the water supply to those faucets. Insulate them with a foam cover to frost-proof them.

Schedule a Roof Cleaning

Before fall, schedule a soft wash roof cleaning to remove mold, dirt, and mildew. At the same time, look for any leaks or cracks that could allow water to seep into your home. Trim back tree limbs that may be overhanging your roof to prevent winter storms from sending those limbs onto your home.

Clean Gutters

Take the time to scoop out debris from your gutters. Clogged gutters can result in water damage, weak foundations, flooded basements and landscaping, insect infestation, and ice dams.

Check Your Siding

Siding plays a big role in ensuring your home remains comfortable and protected throughout the winter. Do a thorough inspection of the siding and be on the lookout for cracks and holes that could introduce leaks. Cleaning your siding can remove mold and mildew from accumulating on the surface and eating away at it.

Prepare Your Deck or Patio

Clean all patio furniture and either cover it for the winter or bring it inside. Hire a concrete cleaning company to protect against erosion caused by snow or rainwater, along with oil and salt. A clean, sealed concrete surface repels water and prevents algae production. Clean, restore and seal all wood surfaces to prevent rot. Neglecting these items can result in expensive repairs come spring.

Hire a Professional to Winter-Proof Your Home

If you don’t have the time, patience, resources or tools to properly prepare your home’s exteriors for winter, choose a professional residential contractor skilled in all these areas to do the job for you. They can take care of all roof cleaning, gutter unclogging, deck restoration, window weatherstripping, siding repairs, and more.
